unAchifa work in progress
2020
Quito, Ecuador- Lima, Perú
During the Balao Creación online residency, my research focused on exploring the influence of ancestry on individuals. I sought to understand how this unseen force might remain inactive until prompted to awaken. Consequently, I questioned the process through which this awakening unfolds.
The work in progress integrated elements of dance, film, and family archives. The resulting video serves as a manifesto for recounting an alternate narrative: the “hi(story)” of “unAchifa.”
Exploring the significance of (hi)story serves as a means of crafting decolonial narratives. From my perspective, such narratives reside within the body, memories, storytelling, and culinary traditions. This exploration intertwines the hidden histories of ingredients from the past with their presence in the present.
The residency took place during the lockdown in Peru, within the confines of my grandparents’ home (specifically, the living room, kitchen, and study). Over the course of a month, I balanced the daily responsibilities of caring for my maternal grandmother (Oma) with the development of my practice and rehearsals, while also collaborating remotely with other Latinx artists in residency from Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil.
